The Fastest and Easiest Way to Remove a Japanese Knife Handle (Even Epoxy-Fitted Handles)

For many years, removing a Japanese knife handle that was installed with epoxy was considered a difficult job. In most cases, the handle had to be cut, drilled, or destroyed to separate it from the tang.

Fortunately, there is a much easier method.

This technique uses an induction cooktop to heat the tang from inside the handle, softening the adhesive and allowing the handle to be removed without damaging it. It works extremely well with both hot-glue and epoxy-installed wa handles.

What You'll Need

  • An induction cooktop
  • A pot filled with water
  • Heat-resistant gloves
  • Your Japanese knife

Step 1: Set Up the Induction Cooktop

Place a pot of water on the induction cooktop and turn it on. The pot keeps the cooktop activated.

Next, position the knife so that the handle sits inside the induction zone while the blade remains outside. (See photo below.)

The magnetic field will heat the hidden tang inside the handle without requiring direct contact with a flame.

Step 2: Heat the Tang

In many cases, it only takes a few seconds for the tang to begin heating up.

Carefully touch the blade just in front of the handle. If it feels warm, try pulling the handle off gently.

Handles installed with hot glue usually come off very quickly.

For epoxy-installed handles, continue heating until the handle becomes noticeably hot. Depending on the amount and type of epoxy used, this may take a little longer. Once sufficiently heated, put on gloves and pull the handle away from the tang with a steady motion.

If the handle does not move, simply heat it a bit longer and try again.

Step 3: Remove the Handle

Wearing gloves, grip the handle firmly and pull it away from the blade using a steady motion.

Avoid excessive twisting or prying. Once the adhesive softens, the handle will usually slide off surprisingly easily.

If it does not move, simply continue heating for a little longer and try again.

Why This Method Works

The induction field heats the steel tang hidden inside the handle. As the tang heats up, the adhesive softens from the inside out.

Compared to traditional removal methods, this approach offers several advantages:

  • Fast and simple
  • No specialized tools required
  • Works with both hot-glue and epoxy installations
  • Greatly reduces the risk of damaging the handle
  • Allows many handles to be reused
  • Much cleaner than drilling or cutting

Not long ago, most makers assumed that an epoxy-installed wa handle could only be removed by destroying it.
